The board issues it. The society does not.
A state agency decides who is licensed, publishes the requirements and is the only source that binds. A professional society is a membership organisation: useful, often the clearest explainer, and with no power to license anybody.

What it is for
Almost everything a candidate reads online is written by somebody who is not the board -- a society, a review course, a forum, a firm's recruiting page. Most of it is accurate and all of it is second-hand, which means all of it can lag. When they disagree, the disagreement is not a debate; one of them is the rule and the others are describing it.
How to think about it
Find the state agency's own site once and keep it. Read anything else you like, but when something matters, check it there before you act on it. If a page does not say which body publishes it, that is the first thing to establish.

The trap
Trusting a table because it is clear. Clarity is a property of the writing, not of the accuracy, and the clearest summaries are often the most out of date, because rewriting a clean table is more work than adding a paragraph to a notice.
