The same file is worth more in October than in February
Many schools decide as applications arrive rather than all at once at the end, against a class that is filling up. Early in the cycle there are many places left and few applications to compare yours against; late in the cycle the reverse is true. The file has not changed. What it is competing against has.

What it is for
Two candidates with the same record applied in the same cycle, four months apart. That is not a story about fairness; it is a story about how many seats were left. Nobody tells an applicant this, because the deadline printed on the page is a deadline, not advice.
How to think about it
Work backwards from when the cycle opens rather than forwards from the deadline. The test has to be sat and scored, the central service has to collect records and letters, and letter-writers are slow in a way you cannot hurry. Each of those has a lead time, and they run in sequence.
Worked example
The deadline on the page is the last date accepted, not the best one.It is a boundary, not a target.
Sitting the test earlier leaves room to sit it again if needed.That option disappears entirely if you leave it late.
Letter-writers need weeks and are the step you control least.Ask early, and ask people who have seen you work.
The central service needs time to assemble and issue the report.Nothing reaches a school until that is done.
