The expedited pathway, and what it still asks of you
A compact exists that lets an eligible physician obtain licences in other member states through a faster route. It is not automatic and it is not universal: you designate one state as your state of principal license, you must meet the compact's own eligibility conditions, and only member states take part.

What it is for
The word people hear is reciprocity, and what the compact actually offers is a quicker application. Eligibility is real: accredited school or the international certification, completed accredited postgraduate training, the examinations passed, no disqualifying disciplinary history, and a licence in good standing in your principal state. A physician who assumes the compact covers them, and who has one of those conditions unmet, has assumed their way into a slower road rather than a faster one.
How to think about it
Check three things in order: is the state I want a member, do I meet the eligibility conditions, and which state is my principal one. The third matters more than people expect, because it is the state the whole pathway hangs from. Am I eligible, or am I planning around a road I cannot use? Boards set these rules themselves and change them, so any figure you plan around has to come from your own board's page rather than from here, from a colleague, or from a summary written in another year.
