The Authorization to Test: what you are actually waiting for
When the board has found you eligible and the examination registration is complete, you are issued an Authorization to Test. That document is what lets you book a seat, and it is valid for a published window only, commonly around ninety days, inside which you have to sit the paper.

What it is for
A graduate who does not know this word cannot tell whether she is waiting for something or whether something is waiting for her, and she has no idea which of the two organisations to ring. Knowing that the Authorization is the output of both applications turns a vague wait into one question with an answer. The window matters for the opposite reason: candidates who receive it and then decide to study for four months discover the authorisation has lapsed and the fee has not.
How to think about it
Treat the Authorization as the milestone rather than the examination date, because it is the part that depends on other people. When it arrives, book a seat the same week, even if the date is far out; you can study towards a booked date and you cannot study towards a date that does not exist. What is the last day on my window, and is my seat inside it? Boards publish their own requirements and change them, so the figure you plan around has to come from your board's own page rather than from here or from anybody who did this a few years ago.
