The calendar, and what a retake really costs

Both tests can be retaken, and both make you wait. The waiting period, not the fee, is what wrecks a timetable: a candidate who sits the test three weeks before a programme's application deadline and misses by two points has no second attempt inside the deadline. Scores also take time to report, and an essay-bearing test reports more slowly than one without.

What it is for

Everything about this test is recoverable except the date. A failed attempt with three months in hand is an inconvenience. The same failed attempt with three weeks in hand costs a year, because programmes admit in cycles. Sitting it early is worth more than sitting it prepared, if you can only have one.

How to think about it

Work backwards from the deadline that actually binds you, which is usually a programme's application date rather than a certification date. Subtract the score reporting window, then the retake waiting period, then one more reporting window. That is the last date on which a first attempt still leaves room for a second.

Worked example

Deadline in June, reporting takes about three weeks, retake waiting is about four weeks

Three weeks plus four weeks plus another three weeks is ten weeks, so a first attempt in late March leaves room for a second.

Register early for a seat rather than for readiness: test centres fill up near deadlines

You can move a booking. You cannot invent a seat that has gone.

Waiting until you feel ready. Feeling ready is not a milestone this test grants anybody, and the calendar does not wait for it. Book a date first and prepare towards it; the date is what makes the preparation happen.
