What changes at the top end of primary
The last two years of primary include the beginning of puberty for many children, a sharp rise in the importance of peers, and the start of abstract reasoning. Physical change begins earlier than most adults expect and at very different times for different children in the same class.

What it is for
A ten-year-old and a twelve-year-old in the same room may be years apart physically, and the gap is visible to them long before it is discussed. Handling that well is a large part of what the top end of primary asks of a teacher, and it is on the examination as human development rather than as pastoral care.
How to think about it
Expect the range rather than an average. Keep changing facilities and routines private and unremarkable. Treat the rising weight of peer opinion as a fact to work with, not defiance: a child who will not answer in front of the class may answer readily in a pair.

The trap
Treating a change in behaviour at ten or eleven as a discipline matter by default. Some of it is developmental, some is social, and reaching for a sanction first misses both and costs the relationship you will need for two more years.
