Safety, first aid, and what the school actually requires of you

You need basic first aid awareness, the principles of playground and classroom safety, and a clear understanding of what your school's policies require you to do and report. The examination asks about prevention and about the teacher's role, which is usually to summon help rather than to treat.

What it is for

A teacher's job in an emergency is mostly not clinical. It is to keep thirty other children safe, to get the right adult there fast, and to record what happened accurately. Knowing that is more useful than half-remembering a first aid course.

How to think about it

Learn your school's actual procedure: who the first aiders are, where the nearest kit is, how an ambulance is called and who meets it, and what has to be written down. Then practise the part that is yours: the rest of the class, the record, and the family contact.

Worked example

Your first duty is the other twenty-nine, and it is the one people forget
Send for help and move the class, rather than leaving them unsupervised at the scene.
Prevention is most of the syllabus: layout, supervision points, and checking equipment
A playground incident is usually a design problem rather than a discipline problem.
Record what happened, in what was observed rather than what was concluded
'Fell from the third rung, holding left wrist' is a record. 'Broke his wrist' is a diagnosis.
Know where the allergy and medical information lives before the day you need it
Two minutes on the first day of term, and it is the most valuable two minutes of the year.
