When study can stand in for part of the experience
Some roads allow a qualification to substitute for a portion of the required experience. The substitution is partial, it is specific about which qualifications count, and it exists because the board judges that study to have delivered part of what the experience delivers.

What it is for
It can be the difference between a plan that works and one that does not, for somebody whose access to supervised work is limited. It is also one of the newer provisions in California, which means it is exactly the sort of thing a summary written a few years ago will not mention at all.
How to think about it
Check whether your road offers a substitution before assuming you must serve the full period, and check which specific qualifications it names. Then check whether a substitution you plan to use is recognised on the road that will actually apply to you, rather than on the one being replaced.

The trap
Planning a whole route around a substitution you have not confirmed applies to your road. Provisions like this are introduced with the new requirements, so somebody on the legacy road may be reading a rule that is not theirs, and somebody on the new road may be ignoring one that is.
