Moving, and the paper reciprocity does not waive

Reciprocity agreements between jurisdictions generally let a licensed electrician transfer without re-sitting the trade examination. What they typically do not waive is the receiving jurisdiction's own laws and rules paper, and they only exist between jurisdictions that have agreed with each other.

What it is for

Reciprocity is heard as 'my licence travels', and what it usually means is 'the hard technical paper travels'. The part that does not travel is the part about local rules, which is exactly the part that could not travel, because it is the thing that differs. It is the same shape as a pharmacist's law paper: the competence is portable and the jurisdiction's rules are not. Somebody planning a move around 'I have reciprocity' can arrive and find an examination in front of them.

How to think about it

Before planning a move, check three things separately: whether an agreement exists between the two jurisdictions at all, what it actually waives, and what it does not. Then budget for the laws and rules paper as though there were no agreement, because there usually is one to sit. Requirements here are set by whoever licenses you and they change, so any figure you plan around has to come from that authority's own page rather than from here or from somebody who qualified in a different place or a different year.
