A licence with a date on it

A licence is issued for a term and must be renewed. Renewal takes continuing education of a recognised kind and an application made before the expiry date, and states frequently require some of those hours to cover named subjects.

What it is for

Lapsing happens to competent people who did the education and missed the act, and it stops them working immediately. The named-subject requirement is the other half: hours of a recognised kind in the wrong subjects can still leave somebody short, which is discovered at renewal rather than during the year.

How to think about it

At the start of each cycle write down the end date, the total, and any named subjects, then divide the total by the years so the figure is small enough to plan. Then check that your provider is one the board recognises before spending an evening on it. Does my state name any subject I have to include? Boards set these rules and change them, so any figure you plan around has to come from your own board's page rather than from here or from somebody who qualified in a different year.
