The background check is the one step whose clock belongs to somebody else
Every state requires a criminal background check, usually with fingerprints, before a credential is issued and often before a candidate may be in a classroom at all. The appointment is short. The processing is not, and neither the candidate nor the programme can speed it up.

What it is for
It is the commonest reason a start date slips, and it slips at the worst moment: a candidate has a post, a class and a September date, and the clearance is still moving through a queue. The result normally goes to the state rather than to the candidate, so there is nothing to show a principal who asks. A check an employer ran for a different job does not satisfy it either, because the requirement is about a check tied to the state's own record of you.
How to think about it
Book it in the week you are admitted, not the week you need it, because it is the step that cannot be compressed and everything else can be done while it travels. Then ask your state two things: where does the result go, and may I be in a classroom before it clears? What is the longest this has taken recently? Which of these applies to you, and what it costs in time, is set by your own state and published by it. Read that page rather than this one for any figure you are going to plan around.
