A region is anywhere that shares something, and somebody drew the line
A region is an area unified by a shared feature: a landscape, a climate, an economy, a language or a political boundary. The boundaries are drawn by people for a purpose, and different purposes produce different regions over the same ground.

What it is for
A pupil who asks where exactly a region begins has asked the right question, and the honest answer is that it depends who drew it and why. That is a genuinely useful thing to understand about every map they will ever see.
How to think about it
For any region, name the feature it shares and who drew the boundary and for what purpose. Then find a second, different region covering the same ground, because there almost always is one and it demonstrates the point better than any explanation.
Worked example
Formal regions share a measurable feature: a language, a climate, a cropThe boundary follows the measurement, and measurements have edges.
Functional regions are organised around a centre: a city and the area it servesA delivery zone or a commuter belt. The edge is where the function stops.
Perceived regions exist because people think of them as one, with fuzzy edgesThe 'south', the 'midwest'. Ask ten people and get ten boundaries.
