What it is for
Candidates prepare for the wrong thing. Treating an open-book paper as an easy one is the classic error: what it tests is whether you can locate a rule quickly and apply it correctly under time pressure, which is a skill that has to be practised against the actual book rather than learned from a summary. Somebody who has memorised facts and never navigated the book runs out of time, which is a different failure from not knowing the material.
How to think about it
Practise against the edition your jurisdiction adopted, with the book you will be allowed to bring, and practise finding rather than recalling. Time yourself looking things up. For the master paper, treat the calculation and the business and law sections as their own subjects rather than as an extension of the trade paper. Requirements here are set by whoever licenses you and they change, so any figure you plan around has to come from that authority's own page rather than from here or from somebody who qualified in a different place or a different year.
